This extraordinary instrument handcrafted by master builder Luigi Borgato draws on the centuries-old practice of connecting a pedal to the keyboard of a piano (and its precursors), similar to what is done with organs. Conceived as a studio instrument, it allowed one to practice in comfort, far from the choir’s freezing temperatures. The Pedalflügel inspired the interest of such composers as Bach, Mozart, Schumann, and Liszt, who harnessed its unique characteristics and dedicated important works to it. Today, this instrument is experiencing all the new possibilities of a renaissance.
